RPSC / RAS Exam Pattern:
The competitive examination comprises three successive phases:
- Phase 1: RAS (Preliminary) Examination (Objective Type)
- Phase 2: RAS (Mains) Examination (Descriptive Type)
- Phase 3: Personal Interview (Personality Test)
Phase 1: RPSC-RAS Prelims Exam (200 Marks) –
The Preliminary Examination will consist of one paper on the subject specified below, which will be of objective type and carry a maximum of 200 marks. The examination is meant to serve as a screening test only. The Standard of the paper will be that of a Bachelor’s Degree Level. The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination by the candidates, who are declared qualified for admission to Main Examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.

Note: Prelims paper will contain 150 question of Objective type and total of 3 hours will be allotted to attempt this paper.
Phase 2: RPSC – RAS Mains Exam (800 Marks)
- The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main Examination will be 15 times the total approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year through the examination but in the said range all those candidates who secure the same marks as may be fixed by the Commission for any lower range will be admitted to the Main Examination.
- The written examination will consist of the following four papers which will be descriptive /analytical
- A candidate must take all the papers listed below which will also consist of question paper of brief, medium, long answer and descriptive type questions.
- The standard of General Hindi and General English will be that of Sr. Secondary Level.
- The time allowed for each paper shall be 3 hours.

Phase 3: RAS Interview/Personality Test – 100 Marks
- Candidates who qualify the RAS Mains Exam will be called for the ‘Personality Test/Interview’. These candidates will be interviewed by a Board appointed by the RPSC.
- The objective of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in the state civil services by a board of competent and unbiased observers.
- The Interview test will be of 100 marks and based on the allotted marks the final merit list will be prepared.

The Syllabus for RAS Competitive Exam is set by the Rajasthan Public Service Commission
(RPSC).
The primary difference between the UPSC Syllabus and the syllabus for state PSC exams is
that for states, candidates have to learn the topics from the state’s perspective as well.
For e.g., if candidates are preparing for RPSC, then they also need to study History, Economy,
Geography, Polity, and Current Affairs related to Rajasthan state as mentioned in the RAS
Syllabus.
The RAS Exam is conducted in three stages (similar to the UPSC IAS Exam)
- Stage 1: RAS Prelims – Objective Type – 200 Marks
- Stage 2: RAS Mains – Theory/Descriptive – 800 Marks
- Stage 3: RAS Interview/Personality Test – 100 Marks

Stage 2: RPSC RAS Mains
- The RAS Syllabus for Mains comprises 4 theory papers of 200 marks each. The papers consist of short, medium and long answer questions.
- There are no optional papers in the syllabus for RAS Mains, unlike the UPSC Mains Syllabus
- Marks in the RAS Mains along with the Interview marks are counted for the final merit list.

Stage 3: RAS Interview/ Personality Test (100 Marks)
- Candidates who qualify the RPSC Mains Exam will be called for the ‘Personality Test/Interview’. These candidates will be interviewed by a Board appointed by the RPSC.
- The objective of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in the civil services by a board of competent and unbiased observers.
- The interview is more of purposive conversation intended to explore the mental qualities and analytical ability of the candidate.
- The Interview test will be of 100 marks and the total marks for written examination is 800. This sums up to a Grand Total of 900 Marks based on which the final merit list will be prepared.
